Contemporary Norwegian Art to Budapest

Sist oppdatert: 2012. 02. 14. // Two exciting exhibitions of Norwegian contemporary arts and crafts will open in Budapest on February 28.

The exhibitions Constructions and Paradigm presenting contemporary arts and crafts by some of the most innovative and exciting Norwegian handicraft artists of today will open at the BH M – Budapest Gallery February 28 and be available for the public until April 1, 2012.

In Norway, the field of decorative arts and craft is characterised by optimism and development but also by deeply rooted traditions. Norwegian artists in this field are therefore in increasing demand outside Norway.

The exhibition Constructions has already travelled the world for some years. It was first shown in the far north town of Kirkenes in Norway in 2008. From there, it went to Murmansk in Russia, and has since been shown at museums and galleries in Europe, South America, Asia and Canada. Paradigm was first presented in Zagreb in Croatia last year, and now the turn has finally come to the Hungarian capital where the joint exhibition Constructions and Paradigm will be open to the public at The Budapest History Museum – Budapest Galéria from February 28 to April 1.

Materials and themes derived from the natural environment of northern Norway contribute to the distinctive character of Constructions, where artworks mainly made out of wood and textile are presented by some of the most outstanding artists in the Norwegian arts and crafts field. In Paradigm we encounter works made out of ceramics, glass and metals, and works with utility functions are found in the exhibition alongside works of a more sculptural character.

There are significant variations in design and expression, but what all the presented artists in Constructions and Paradgim share is the closeness to and respect for the material and the mastering of old inherited techniques. Some artists have strong traditional roots while others are more experimental. The exhibitions demonstrate the artists’ unique ability to combine tradition and innovation.

The exhibitions are a collaboration between the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Norwegian Association of Arts & Crafts. Norwegian textile artist Edith Lundebrekke and metal artist Lars Sture are the curators. They are both practising artists as well as experienced curators, and they play an active role in the development of the Norwegian contemporary arts and crafts field.

The exhibitions Constructions and Paradigm - Contemporary Norwegian Arts and Craft is open daily 10 a.m. – 6. P.m. except for Mondays until April 1 2012.
