–The aim of this forum is to give space and dialogue for representatives for international organizations, NGOs and government, said János Martonyi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, in his opening remarks at the fourth “Budapest Human Rights Forum”.
The minister also took time to thank Norway and other supporters, and to present the four topics of the human rights forum: human rights in the EU, gender policies, responsibility to protect and the Arab spring.
Human rights and gender issues
The forum was divided into four panels stretching over two days, and the first day focused on the activities and representation of the European Union in the field of human rights.
As the EU considers human rights a priority in its bilateral relations and multilateral forum, the panel aimed at providing deeper insight into the human rights policy of the EU, focusing on its priorities and efficiency in different forums.
The second panel of the day dealt with gender issues and women’s rights, and drew attention to the challenges women face, with regards to full enjoyment of human rights and their role in society.
Responsibility to protect and democratic transitions
The second day, and third panel, focused on the implementation of the principle of the "Responsibility to Protect" in practice, with special regard to the role of regional and sub-regional organisations.
The last and closing panel tackled the human rights aspects of the Arab spring, with focus on the possibilities for and challenges connected to a democratic transition.
The forum was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary.
